U.S. Wheat Quality: Winning Beyond Price
U.S. wheat exports finished the 2025/26 marketing year with strong sales across core and price-sensitive markets—but the next challenge may be even more important. With a smaller hard red winter wheat crop and higher prices expected, can the industry turn last year’s bargain-driven purchases into lasting customer demand? Brian Liedl, vice president of overseas operations for U.S. Wheat Associates, joins Aaron Harries and Justin Gilpin to discuss the outlook for global wheat trade. Liedl explains why Mexico remains critical to Kansas wheat farmers, how Nigeria and Indonesia are becoming more focused on flour and end-product quality, and why long-term technical support gives U.S. wheat an advantage beyond price. The conversation also examines tighter HRW supplies, Russian and Black Sea competition, growing global wheat consumption and the role that blending strategies may play in helping overseas millers control costs. Liedl says the industry’s goal is not simply to move bushels—it is to demonstrate value, retain customers and ensure export market development delivers a return to wheat producers.

FSA Overhaul: Faster Help for Kansas Farmers
USDA Under Secretary for Farm Production and Conservation Richard Fordyce and Kansas FSA State Executive Director David Schemm join Aaron Harries to talk about the future of USDA service delivery for Kansas wheat producers. The conversation covers USDA reorganization, FSA staffing and county office service, the One Farmer, One File modernization effort, acreage reporting improvements, crop insurance coordination, trade, input costs and the mood across farm country. Fordyce and Schemm explain how FSA, NRCS and RMA are working toward a more connected system that could reduce paperwork, eliminate duplicate forms and eventually allow producers to complete acreage reports from a phone or through precision ag data. For wheat producers navigating tight margins, short crops, high input costs and uncertain markets, the episode offers a practical look at where federal farm programs may be headed and what farmers should watch next.

Kansas Wheat Harvest: Smaller Crop, Bigger Stakes
Kansas wheat harvest is moving again after an unusually early start, followed by rain delays and high humidity across parts of the state. In this episode of Wheat’s On Your Mind, Aaron Harries and Justin Gilpin visit with Mike O’Dea and Josh Linville of StoneX about what the 2026 crop is showing so far, including low yields in continuous wheat, stronger results in good summer fallow fields, and protein that varies sharply by region. The conversation also digs into why hard red winter wheat has become more competitive in export channels, including rail movement into Mexico, while global wheat quality questions remain in Europe and southern Russia. On the input side, Linville explains the sharp drop in urea prices from recent highs, why low grain prices still make fertilizer feel expensive, and why producers may want to think about buying fertilizer in layers instead of making one big purchase. The episode closes with a broader look at crop-input security, nitrogen production, phosphate limits, potash trade with Canada, and what producers should watch heading into the next round of USDA reports.
