Beyond the Checklist: Choosing Extracurriculars That Matter

Extracurriculars: How to Pick What to Invest Your Time In When it comes to college admissions, students often feel like they need to do it all—join clubs, volunteer, pursue research, shadow a physician, take on leadership roles, play sports, find an internship, or even start a nonprofit or passion project. But more activities don’t necessarily make a stronger application. In this episode, we talk about how students can be more intentional about the extracurriculars they choose and, more importantly, where they invest their time. We discuss why colleges aren’t looking for a magic number of activities or hours, how to recognize meaningful opportunities, and why depth and commitment often matter more than collecting titles. We also explore three important areas for students interested in healthcare—research, shadowing, and volunteering—and how these experiences can help students explore their interests rather than simply check a box on a college application. Students don’t have to know exactly what they want to do freshman year, and they certainly don’t have to stick with an activity they hate. Trying different things is part of the process. The key is recognizing what sparks genuine interest and then looking for opportunities to go deeper through increased responsibility, mentoring, teaching, creating, or taking initiative. Ultimately, extracurriculars should do more than fill an activities list. They should help tell the story of who a student is, what they value, what they’re curious about, and how they choose to spend their time.

Emotional Maturity: The Skill That Matters More Than You Think

Emotional Maturity + Self-Awareness: What Do Colleges Really Want to See? What does it actually mean for a 17-year-old to sound “mature” in a college essay? In this episode, we explore the fine line between demonstrating meaningful life experience and trying too hard to sound wise beyond your years. A strong college essay doesn’t require a dramatic story, an extraordinary accomplishment, or a claim to have solved the world’s biggest problems. Instead, admissions readers want to see students who understand themselves, can reflect on their experiences, and are beginning to recognize the complexity of the world around them. We discuss common ways essays can unintentionally sound immature—from black-and-white statements and universal truths to focusing too heavily on minor high school drama—and how students can approach these topics with greater nuance. We also explore the importance of taking responsibility for mistakes, considering multiple perspectives, being open to feedback, and showing a willingness to learn and change. Ultimately, maturity in an essay isn’t about pretending to be older than you are. It’s about being authentically yourself while demonstrating that you are thoughtful, curious, self-aware, and ready to continue growing. Tune in for practical advice on how students can bring authenticity, humility, nuance, and emotional maturity into their college essays.

Admissions Myths: What Social Media Gets Wrong

TikTok, Reddit, Instagram, and other social media platforms are filled with college admissions advice—and some of it is genuinely helpful. But some of it is misleading, outdated, or missing a whole lot of context. In this episode, we’re tackling some of the biggest college admissions myths we hear from students and parents online and separating what’s actually true from what just sounds convincing on the internet. We’ll explore: “This is the essay that got me into [insert college]!” Why one essay rarely tells the whole admissions story. We’ll talk about holistic admissions, how essays fit into the larger application, and why an essay that worked for one student may not work for another. We’ll also discuss whether students should read sample essays—and how to use them for inspiration without turning them into a roadmap. “I saw on Reddit that…” Are interview invitations already gone out? Is a program already full? Does a particular college hate when students talk about a certain topic? We’ll discuss what Reddit and other online communities can be useful for—and why students should always check the date and year when reading admissions information online. “My college only lets four students from my high school get in.” Is there really a secret limit on how many students a college will admit from one high school? We’ll explain how colleges evaluate applicants from the same school, the reality behind geographic considerations and quotas, and why having strong students from your high school admitted in previous years may actually be a positive. “Colleges want well-rounded students with tons of extracurriculars.” We’ll talk about how the definition of a strong extracurricular profile has evolved, why depth and passion can be more meaningful than collecting activities, and why you don't need to be president of seven clubs to stand out. We’ll also talk about passion projects and how students can demonstrate genuine interests in ways that go beyond a traditional activity list. “I earned $1 million in college scholarships!” We’ll break down what those impressive scholarship numbers you see online actually mean—and why students need to look beyond the headline number when evaluating scholarship offers. Throughout the episode, we’ll come back to one important question: Do you know that this advice is actually true—or did you just see it on social media? Because when it comes to college admissions, context matters. What worked for one student, at one school, in one admissions cycle may have nothing to do with what will work for you. Our biggest advice? Use social media to gather ideas and perspectives—but don't let TikTok or Reddit become your college admissions counselor. Always look for current, reliable information from the college itself, especially when deadlines, policies, and application requirements can change from year to year.
