About Working with Nature: Coastal Climate Resilience
Coastal and island countries in Southern Africa are particularly vulnerable to the impacts ofclimate change. Ecosystem-based adaptation (EbA) can help enhance climate resilience forcoastal communities in the region. The health and abundance of coastal ecosystems underpins livelihoods for many coastal communities in SADC. In addition, low levels of socio-economic development, combined with limited livelihood opportunities, drive vulnerability among coastal communities in the region.

Governance of EbA and Community Participation
Current regulatory frameworks in many SADC countries are insufficient to ensure community involvement. In the absence of government action, communities adapt autonomously, sometimes in an uncoordinated manner. In this episode Dr. Celia Macamo, discusses her research paper which identifies the need to include communities in EbA policy, planning and governance in coastal zones of SADC.

There has recently been progress in strengthening marine and coastal EbA in climate policy in Africa, along with a surge in ocean research globally. However, rising concerns over terrestrial issues in climate policy have overshadowed marine and coastal EbA concerns.

Financing EbA
Financing for EbA remains one of the most pressing challenges for countries trying to pursue climate action.

What is EbA and why is it important for the region?
EbA is the use of biodiversity and ecosystem services as part of an overall climate adaptation strategy to help people adapt to the adverse effects of climate change.
