World Science Café, 13.02.2020 - Migration & Human Trafficking in the Global South

Menschenhandel ist ein eng mit Globalisierung und Migration verbundenes Phänomen. In seinem Vortrag konzentriert sich Dr. Jonathan Ngeh auf die Erfahrungen der Ausbeutung und des Missbrauchs von in die Arabischen Golfstaaten migrierten Kamerunerinnen und Kamerunern. Basis seiner Analyse sind ethnographische Daten, die er bei Feldforschungen in Dubai (in 2015) und Kamerun (in 2016) gewonnen hat. Dabei wird Menschenhandel nicht nur bedingt durch, sondern auch eingebettet in gesellschaftsspezifische soziale und machtpolitische Prozesse untersucht. Dr. Jonathan Ngeh promovierte 2011 in Soziologie an der Universität Umeå in Schweden. Seit August 2019 ist Dr. Jonathan Ngeh Gastwissenschaftler am Global South Studies Center (GSSC) an der Universität zu Köln. Sein Forschungsinteresse richtet sich auf die Analyse und das Verstehen der Dynamiken sozialer Ungleichheiten in einer globalisierten Welt. Dabei legt er seinen Forschungsfokus auf die Phänomene und Prozesse der Migration und des Menschenhandels.

In her lecture, the Turkish sociologist Prof. Dr. Betül Yarar discuss how the female body and female sexuality are exploited in contemporary Turkish politics to strengthen neoliberal and neoconservative trends. She analyses the phenomenon alongside the observation that on one hand, the regime increases homogenisation tendencies and tries to ensure control over the female body, while on the other hand, a large part of the success of this politics is owed to its extraordinary appeal to female voters. The World Science Café is hosted by Prof. Dr. Caroline Y. Robertson-von Trotha in cooperation with the International Scholars & Welcome Office (IScO) on Karlsruher Institute of Technology.
