About You Said 100 Miles?

You Said 100 Miles? started as the story of Bucket Hat Bob diving into the world of ultrarunning. It started with a couch to 5K in 2020, and just kept escalating through finishing a 100 mile race in 2023. Originally envisioned as a limited series, the community has kept Bucket Hat Bob on the air. Season 1 with co-host Sass is the original run and story of that build. Season 2 is some experimental interviewing. Today, we're continuing season 3 with co-host KJ covering all sorts of ultrarunning topics (and museums) along with guests from the running community along the way. Come to the trails.    It's the September-ish show, technically only 6 days late, and we make up for missing museums on the last episode: KJ's Twenty Mule Borax stop in Death Valley (next to a golf course nobody should play in 120 degrees), the Clyfford Still Museum that keeps nearly all its art in storage, and Bob's work trip to Trondheim, where King Olaf is missing, the airport hotel welcomes you to Hell, and the flight home goes from Hell to the other hell, O'Hare.    Eastern States (is) Special

   Elliott Beach is back for the first time since his HURT YS100M debut, and he and KJ walk us through crewing and pacing Jada at Badwater 135 — mandatory sauna training nobody enjoys, the Walmart aisle crawl, and the Dungeon Crawler Carl van theme complete with matching boxer shorts and a Princess Donut light. Strap in for an hour of how the crew hid problems from Jada and lamented losing their Powerade. Also: the portable flush toilet. Clutch. Then Badger 100, notoriously the hottest race on earth, which was cold and pouring rain — Bob made seventy-odd grilled cheeses (with pickles in them, fight him), and Orangeville ran a full Waffle House theme with name tags, a slushy machine, a call-ahead menu board, and Elliott chasing runners down the trail with hash browns. Finally Eastern States 100, where Rocksylvania earns the name: twenty-thousand-plus feet of climbing, a chest-deep creek crossing, a, rattlesnakes, blueberry pancakes you summon with an air horn and then can't eat, and a 54% DNF rate. Elliott dropped at Tomb Flats; KJ dry-heaved his way to a buckle and then got eaten alive by biting flies in the finish-line grass.    Bob is officially back to running — gingerly. Coach Claude drew up a twelve-week run-walk plan, the carbon plate has been demoted to his walking shoes, and there's now a barbell in the garage and daily ankle rehab, all in the name of never rolling that ankle mid-race again. Meanwhile KJ is deep in Badwater taper: endless sauna sessions that have earned him a genuine, app-certified Heat Champion belt (cup-holder mods pending), uphill treadmill work, and a Precision Hydration race-day plan he walks us through gram by gram. Then it goes gloriously off the rails. We narrate the Precision Hydration case-study site for what KJ swears is “excellent pod,” mistake a 29029 Everesting event for a “hiking race” and rename it wilderness sauntering, break down the logistics of pacing Badwater two miles at a time, and launch the KJ Pacer Lottery for Eastern States (is there an Alex?).
