《中华上下五千年》，是《二十四史》的缩写本。毛泽东一生酷爱读史，尤以《二十四史》为最。他认为读史可以知兴亡，明事理，但洋洋数万言的《二十四史》引经据典、浩繁冗长。编者根据《二十四史》，删繁就简，撷取精华，撰写成《中华上下五千年》。
