People v. Makenzie Shirilla: Intent or Impact?
In 2022, 17-year-old Makenzie Shirilla crashed her Toyota Camry into a commercial building in Strongsville, Ohio, at approximately 100 mph, killing her boyfriend Dominic Russo and friend Davion Flanagan. Prosecutors argued the crash was intentional, citing prior threats, relationship conflict, and crash data suggesting sustained acceleration. Makenzie waived her right to a jury trial, and in 2023 a judge convicted her of multiple counts of murder, finding the act intentional rather than reckless. The case remains highly debated, with questions surrounding intent, crash reconstruction, and whether the evidence proved murder beyond a reasonable doubt.
