[…] Yes, Hong Kong is a shopping paradise. 对,所以我买了很多东西。 Right, so you might have learned 买东西。 That means to go shopping, but it literally means to buy things. 对。 And what are the tones on that? 买第三声。 东西第一声和轻声。 Okay, 买 is third tone, 东西 is first and neutral. 对。 So 买东西, we often translate that as to go shopping, but we noticed in this sentence the 买 got separated from the 东西, right? 我买了很多东西。 So we put the 了 after 买 to tell us that they did that already. 对。 And you want to emphasize that you bought a lot of things. 很多。 So instead of just 买了东西, it's 我买了很多东西。 So I bought a lot of stuff. 对。 Wouldn't work to use the shopping translation in this case.
