The Road to 1500 Locations with Tianna Strateman of Club Pilates
For a brand approaching its 20th anniversary and reaching its 1500th location, standing still isn't an option. Tianna Strateman, the brand president of Club Pilates, joined the podcast to explain how the brand is evolving on two fronts at once: introducing a new circuit-style class format and rolling out studio refreshes system-wide, all while protecting the member experience that got it here.
Strateman sat down with Club Solutions editor and podcast host Taylor Gabhart to discuss the signals that led Club Pilates to build the new class offering, how the brand designed the studio refreshes to minimize disruption and maximize ROI for franchisees, and what KPIs the brand tracks to measure success of a system-wide launch. The conversations offers insights for any operator weighing how to innovate without losing what made their brand work in the first place.

Operators Hold the Key to Sustaining Results for Older Adults When Supervision Ends
A new randomized controlled trial published in Acta Diabetologica tracked older adults with type 2 diabetes and sarcopenia through 12 weeks of supervised resistance training and 12 weeks of self-managed home training to measure what happens when supervision is withdrawn.
In the latest episode of The Research Debrief, hosts Luke Carlson and Rachel Chonko break down the paper and what its findings mean for health club operators deciding how, and how long, to deliver professional support.
This Episode Covers:
- The study design: 62 adults with an average age above 72, all with type 2 diabetes and sarcopenia, randomized to a non-exercising control group or an exercise group completing 12 weeks of supervised resistance training followed by 12 weeks of self-managed home training.
- The outcomes measured, including muscle mass, hand grip strength, sit-to-stand performance, sarcopenia status (via the SARC-CalF score) and HbA1c.
- The central distinction that the trial does not compare supervision against no supervision, but examines what happens after supervision is removed.
- The adherence gap: 93.5% attendance during the supervised phase versus 38.7% adherence in the self-managed phase.
- Improvements in grip strength, sit-to-stand performance and sarcopenia screening after the supervised phase, which attenuated once supervision was withdrawn.
- The finding that muscle mass held relatively steady at home while strength and functional measures declined, underscoring the need for nuance about which benefits are lost and which are retained.
- The authors' explanation, which points to weaker progressive overload, intensity adjustment, movement-quality correction, accountability, exercise confidence and habit formation.
- The authors' call for hybrid models combining periodic supervision, remote monitoring, automated reminders and feedback-guided exercise logs, an approach the trial itself did not test.

Free Weights or Machines? What the Latest Meta-Analysis Reveals
A recent systematic review and meta-analysis examines how free weight and machine-based strength training compare across three outcomes: maximal strength, muscle hypertrophy and jump performance — a common proxy for power — and the findings may hold weight for club equipment decisions.
Among the paper's central takeaways, no differences were detected between the two training modalities in a direct comparison, including among more advanced trainees. In this episode of Research Debrief, hosts Luke Carlson and Rachel Chonko break down the findings and what they mean for club operators, from planning strength equipment investments as demand grows to how clubs educate members and staff about progression.
