Service Beyond the Scalpel | Dr. George Hruza on Medicine, Democracy, and the Duty to Lead
"Medicine is like chess. Legislating is more like poker."
Dr. George Hruza is a Mohs micrographic surgeon, a past president of the American Academy of Dermatology, the American Society for Dermatologic Surgery, and the Missouri State Medical Association, and since January 2025 a member of the Missouri House of Representatives. He had been advocating to lawmakers in Washington since 2001. At some point he decided that advocating was not enough, and that medicine needed a seat at the table rather than a turn at the microphone.
In the new episode of Dermatology Undressed: a Provocative Podcast, Dr. Lindsay Ackerman asks him what surprised him most about how laws actually get made. His answer is the clearest description we have heard of why so few practicing physicians end up in a legislature, and why the ones who do matter so much: in medicine there is usually a right path, and in a legislature there is usually a negotiation.
The full conversation covers the Medicare Advantage plan that dropped most of the dermatologists in St. Louis mid-year and what happened when he went public, the anesthesia bill where being a physician in the room changed the outcome, and his advice for any resident or mid-career dermatologist who cares about these issues but has never written a letter or joined a delegation.

Skin Cancer: Truth and Consequences | Dr. Marta Van Beek
Skin cancer is the most common cancer in the United States, and it may be the most misunderstood. In this episode of Dermatology Undressed: a Provocative Podcast, Dr. Lindsay Ackerman sits down with Dr. Marta Van Beek, Professor of Dermatology at the University of Iowa Carver College of Medicine, nationally recognized Mohs surgeon, and member of the AMA Board of Trustees, for a candid conversation on the truth and consequences of skin cancer.
Together, they explore why 1 in 5 Americans will develop skin cancer before age 70, why there is no such thing as a healthy tan, the surprising science of tanning addiction, and what the FDA's reversal of the tanning bed ban for minors means for public health. Dr. Van Beek also demystifies Mohs micrographic surgery, the technique with a 99 percent cure rate, and makes the case that early detection can be the difference between a simple office procedure and a lifetime of treatment.
From UVA and UVB to base tan myths and cloudy day sunburns, this conversation goes beneath the surface of the cancer too many people dismiss as "the good one." This episode is a timely reminder that skin cancer is not trivial, it is not cosmetic, and it is not optional to take seriously.

Psoriasis Is More Than Skin Deep | Dr. Joel Gelfand
Psoriasis is visible on the skin, but what is happening beneath the surface may have implications far beyond it.
In this episode of Dermatology Undressed: a Provocative Podcast, Dr. Lindsay Ackerman sits down with Dermatologist and Epidemiologist Dr. Joel Gelfand, whose pioneering research has helped define the connection between psoriasis and cardiovascular disease.
They explore why psoriasis is now recognized as a cardiovascular risk enhancer, how chronic inflammation may connect the skin to the heart, and why people living with psoriasis may face increased risks of heart attack, stroke, diabetes, and other metabolic conditions.
Dr. Gelfand also discusses what the evidence can, and cannot, tell us about whether treating psoriasis changes cardiovascular risk, the importance of screening for blood pressure, cholesterol, and diabetes, and why psoriasis should never be dismissed as simply a skin condition.
It is a conversation about looking beyond what we can see on the skin to better understand what may be happening throughout the body.

Women Power Healthcare, But Rarely Lead It | Amy Perry
Women make up the majority of the healthcare workforce and often guide the medical decisions made within their families. Yet only a small percentage of the nation’s largest healthcare systems are led by women.

She also explores the importance of board representation, professional relationships, strong support systems, and helping more women reach positions where they can influence research, innovation, and patient care.
The conversation also looks toward the future of healthcare, including investments in technology, preventive care, community wellness, and a model that reaches people before they become sick.
This is a candid conversation about leadership, representation, and creating a healthcare system that better reflects the people who power it.

The Women’s Health Crisis Hiding in Plain Sight | Dr. Gail Goldstein
What happens when women’s health falls between medical specialties, and when geography determines whether a preventable disease becomes deadly?
In this episode of Dermatology Undressed: a Provocative Podcast, Dr. Lindsay Ackerman speaks with board-certified dermatologist and global medical volunteer Dr. Gail Goldstein, co-founder and board member of the Gynecologic Cancers Research Foundation.
Dr. Goldstein shares how her organization brings HPV testing, cervical cancer screening, early intervention, and treatment to women in underserved and marginalized communities around the world. From screening garment workers during their lunch breaks in Cambodia to navigating cultural stigma and limited access to care, the conversation reveals what it truly means to meet women where they are.
The discussion also explores the often-overlooked intersection of dermatology and gynecology, including lichen sclerosus, vulvar cancer, and the symptoms women may dismiss or that clinicians may miss because vulvar health too often falls into the space between specialties.
This is a conversation about prevention, access, medical blind spots, and why compassionate care should have no borders.
