[…] So what is that? I think there are sort of two ways of looking at this. One is to really focus on the Secretary General as a political figure who does still have an unusual amount of access and can, thanks to the nature of the post, still build or at least should be able to build relationships with everyone. And I think that there is a feeling that the next UN chief will be not be able to start making peace overnight. They will have to start firming up relationships with the P5, developing relationships with middle powers, rebuilding relationships with certain countries like Israel, which has declared Guterres persona non grata, but sort of getting to a point where a range of leaders are comfortable talking to them.
