[…] There are three million temporary migrants in Australia, which is about a third of every Australian age between 25 and 29 is a temporary migrant. Most of them are students and backpackers. Now, that's created a sense, a growing sense in some parts of the community that there is a big proportion of people in the country who will never become citizens and that that's a problem for national cohesion. On the other side of the coin, a lot of industries rely on these workers, students who can work outside of their study and backpackers who are cheap labour, particularly in the regions. And so to address those concerns around national cohesion and unity and social cohesion, there has to be a balancing act with how you allow these industries to address labour shortages. […]
