[…] So with that in mind, in December of 2019, the Supreme Court grants certiorari in McGirt. So the Muscogee people, whom the federal government calls the Creek Indians, originally lived in Georgia and Alabama. And in the first half of the 19th century, it turned out that their land was very valuable for cotton plantations. So in 1830, Congress passed the Indian Removal Act, which authorized President Andrew Jackson to trade this kind of grubby desert land west of the Mississippi River for this very valuable land that people wanted to plant cotton on. And the Indian Removal Act also instructed the president to, quote, assure the tribe the United States will forever secure and guarantee to them that new land west of the Mississippi, including giving them an actual deed for the land, which is sometimes called a patent.
