[…] New York is not one of them, both defining and criminalizing grooming. Essentially, in layman's terms, grooming is building a relationship. It's not specific to schools. It's any time that an adult or an alleged perpetrator builds a relationship with a victim with the intention of that leading to sexual abuse. And that can take many different forms. It is an incredibly manipulative process. In many cases, survivors don't realize in the moment that they're being groomed. And sometimes years later, don't even realize it. And that's actually A big part of what I heard from experts, why it takes especially child survivors so long to come forward, because the grooming process sometimes shields the abuse in some ways.
