Huang used swaps from global banks to build enormous leverage positions in stocks like ViacomCBS. The Turkish funds did their borrowing at home, and financial experts who've looked at the trade say they borrowed against the inflated stocks themselves. When Huang's stocks fell in 2021, his banks made margin calls. When Terra's prices stopped rising, it faced a run from retail savers.
