[…] Their native neighbours might hide in them during war, they might even build dwellings and send their women and children to them for safety, but they simply couldn't be real homes. So when the United Colonial Force made its way into the Great Swamp, and they found a wooden palisade protecting hundreds of wigwams and thousands of people, they didn't see a fortified town, because it couldn't be a town. Instead, contemporaries referred to it as a fort, or a nest or den, a base for raids and ambushes, a legitimate military target, along with everyone inside. Winslow had hoped that the appearance of the colonial army would intimidate the Narragansett into surrender, but then again he hadn't expected to find a fortified position. […]
