PSA: The Dangers of Flying Helicopters Indoors
In another coup for People Want Ducks, we've secured our movie reviewer Nick Langdon to join us on the podcast! Oh, and we also got Ed Kavalee too. Listen to how Ed got onto the show, his paneling skills and the fate of the pilot, his thoughts on Richard, his movie preferences, the KFC ad, Get This callers, flying helicopters indoors, and share houses. And was Ed's flatmate "John" really Ash Williams? Tune in to find out. Don't forget to check out Ed Kavalee in Cop This - October 5th at 9:40pm, Channel 10! The Smell of Get This
We're back with our third and final part of our conversation with Tony Martin! We talk about the "Save Get This" rally, the cancellation of the show and rumours about its possible continuation, including a potential TV project. We take a dive into movies and Nick Langdon's audit of all the films ever mentioned on Get This, and we "expose" Natalie to Shortbus. Politics, Richard Marsland, the legacy of Get This and more— Tony delivers more than just relief at the bowser. "My Mistake Was Quoting Orson Welles"
We're back with more from Tony Martin! In this second part of our conversation, we discuss the music, management, ratings, and Matt comes clean with a confession about an outage which knocked out Get This in Brisbane for a day — shocking horror, another cover up? We also debunk some myths, and hear Tony's thoughts on how long Get This might have continued on for had it not been for the thugs in the scallop industry. Country People With Credibility
You asked, we (well, Natalie) delivered: Tony Martin! In this first part of our interview with him, we discuss how Get This came to be, starting with Tony's time on Tough Love and how he caught the eye of Peter Harvie (not the guy from Canberra), and the first few months of the show. There's much more to come, so stay tuned to the People Want Ducks podcast! We're Still Taking The Music Seriously
We had so much material for our music special, we're flipping the record over: these are the B-Sides. Tyler Jenke is back with us. Steven comes up with more "creative" grabs. We look at Tony, Ed and Richard's Beatles impersonations and ask, was Peter Cundall in the Beatles? Matt meets John Jarrett. Natalie visits Paul McCartney in Rome, and gives us a preview of her new career in crunk. We look back at the music trivia smackdown between Alan Brough and Richard. More Dave Graney, more insights into music on played on Triple M, Kavaloke, concert experiences, and don't worry, we didn't forget this time: Is It Silverchair? And Nick Langdon is back again, hopefully providing his review from a sunken conversation pit. The Better Music Variety
It's all about the music for episode 7, and who else could we have on People Want Ducks to discuss this but Get This' resident musician, Dave Graney! We dive deep into Orange Juice, Aztec Camera, The Knack, Kathy Fire, Lou Reed's Metal Machine Music, Mt Gambier and statues for famous residents, Dirty Three and Warren Ellis' vendetta on Billy Joel, Aldo Ray, rare 45's, Alan Partridge, Name That Tune, Dave's appearance on Neighbours, and much much more. We're also joined by Tyler 'The Jenk' Jenke, who takes us through a deep dive into all the music ever played on Get This. If you're data buff, you'll love this. We also revisit stories from Lisa the Goth, Robyn Hitchcock, Anton Corbijn, Tim Rogers, Jimmy Barnes, Weird Al, Marty Sheargold, and Angus Sampson. And from the archives we hear from Alan Brough and Josh Pike about music videos and programming on Rage. We also take a few minutes to celebrate Damien Lovelock's time on the show, and of course Nick Langdon is back, taking his movie review up to 11. This massive episode includes many great musical moments from Get This, so if you're a fan of new romantics, pirate pants and flatbed trucks, you'll want to join us. The All New People Want Ducks
We're back for a new year, and a new year of Get This! On this hallowed day — the 20th anniversary of the first episode of Get This — Steven, Matt and Natalie dive deep into the first few weeks of 2007, where the 2 hour format came from, and the search for a sponsor. We also take a deep dive into early 2007 drama, where Tony goes head to head with Triple M management on the music variety. More importantly though, we're also joined by Get This' 5th Beatle Greg Fleet! We reminisce about Jumperpants (aka Das Jümperpanten), Delivery Man 2, getting pushed off or stabbed off, and much more. And as always Nick Langdon is back, this time bringing us the finest wines available to humanity. Pot, Kettle!
We're back with episode 5 to wrap up Get This for 2006! Steven, Matt and Natalie discuss their recent concert experiences, including some vox pops with some Get This fans. Steven begins his own "funnyman feud" with a PWD listener. We cover some of the recurring pop culture references that Get This covered in late 2006, such as Karl Stefanovic being a robot, Frank Butcher vs David Dickinson, Ed's failed tilt at getting on Australia's Funniest Home Videos, Tony's obsession with Goldeneye, references to the cast of G.P., and Ed vs his many detractors for the "Table Tennis Tournoi". Helmet of Hair
With upgraded audio equipment, we're back for episode 4. We're joined by Get This alum Tony Wilson, where we cover sports, books, CDs covered in jam, the radio ratings system, and his memories of working with Tony Martin and appearing on Get This. Champagne Comedy Podcast regular Alison subs in for Natalie who is out this week, because in true Australian radio industry style, we (temporarily) replaced one woman with another. We cover later 2006 material, reminiscing about what happens when you play songs from The Wiggles backwards, whether Ed is "keeping the girl happy" or "Dealing with Dickinson", Get This breaking out into new markets, and the beginnings of recurring references like Ed's KFC ad, Richard's many nicknames, and Passiona High. Steven takes a stand on Tony, Ed and Richard's regular technical misnomers and interviews a true titan of the internet to correct the Get This team. And Nick Langdon is back for a review of a mid-90's cop drama "classic". Check out Tony Wilson's substack, "Good one, Wilson! (https://goodonewilson.substack.com/)", and his new movie, "Ange and The Boss (https://angeandtheboss.com/)". "I've Got The Pilot On VHS"
It's the People Want Ducks TV Special! We're honored to have Get This resident TV historian Andrew Mercado join us to recap much of the television covered in Get This. We discuss much of what he brought to the Get This team, including his theme tune singing skills. Andrew provides us with an updated look at how old Australian TV is getting new life on streaming services. Steven asks some hard questions, like "Did Kate Raison really have two separate stalker storylines on Australian TV?". We also revisit stories told about behind the scenes on Australian TV from the 1960's and 70's, some of it requiring some intestinal fortitude. Matt challenges us to see whether we can guess if he's impersonating Homer Simpson, or Blakey from On The Buses. And yes, Nick Langdon's movie club is back, and it's not a TV movie! (Although one could argue that it should have been.) Andrew Mercado has his own excellent podcast, TV Gold (https://andrewmercado.com/sample-page/book/). You should check it out. How Good Is This?
We're back for Episode 2! We got some listener feedback, including from Steven’s mum. We explain the mastery of Gavin Wood to a confused American listener. We cover Get This' mid 2006 period and ask questions like, “is there a sequel to “Romulus, My Father”?” We welcome Richard Marsland onto Get This and cover growing array of international guests. We review Ed’s trip to the 2006 World Cup and based upon a random comment Tony made, Steven flies to New York to debunk a misconception. Nick Langdon is also back, and we hear from a past Get This co-host about their memories of the show in an exclusive piece for People Want Ducks. We dive deep into the machinations of Rex Hunt. Is it dizzy stuff? You’ll have to tune in and find out. It's finally here! Join Steven, Natalie and Matt as we cover some truly "niche" material from Get This' first few months. Steven tries out his Bob Franklin impression. Shaft of Hope. Matt reveals the secrets on how fans recorded the show. And how did the phrase "People Want Ducks" come about? Natalie investigates. Also for your enjoyment, Nick Langdon presents the Get This Movie Club.
