What Happened at Nanda Devi Mountain and Why Did So Many People Die Here?
High in the Himalayas lies Roopkund Skeleton Lake, a remote glacial lake surrounded by hundreds of human remains. For centuries, local tradition connected the dead to Nanda Devi, a fierce and protective Himalayan goddess whose mountain has held an extraordinary spiritual power over pilgrims and climbers alike. This story follows that strange pull from Chantal Mauduit’s mysterious 1998 death elsewhere in the Himalayas, to Willi Unsoeld’s lifelong fascination with Nanda Devi and the tragic 1976 expedition that claimed his daughter, Nanda Devi Unsoeld. Then came 2019, when eight climbers disappeared near Peak 6477. Their recovered GoPro offered a final glimpse of them alive. And at Roopkund, DNA revealed something even stranger: some of the dead arrived nearly 1,000 years apart, including people with eastern Mediterranean ancestry. What happened in these mountains and why did so many people never come back?#hikingadventures #nandadeviyatra #Himalayas #skeletonlake #roopkund #ReembokArcane

He Lost 2 Brothers. Then The Mountain Buried Him and His Nephew | Himlung Himal Avalanche 2026
On September 27, 2026, an avalanche struck Himlung Himal Base Camp in Nepal, burying the Nepali workers who had gone ahead to prepare the mountain for the autumn climbing season. The foreign climbers had not even arrived.Tents were being erected. Supplies were being organized. The climbing route was being prepared. Then the mountain above Base Camp gave way.Fifteen Nepali expedition workers ultimately lost their lives. One person remained missing. This is the full story of the Himlung Himal avalanche from the severe weather warnings issued before the disaster, the developing Bay of Bengal weather system and extraordinary snowfall across Nepal, to the avalanche itself and the dangerous search-and-recovery operation that followed. We reconstruct the timeline of what happened at Himlung Himal, 7,126 metres (23,379 ft) and examine the questions that remain:Why were workers still preparing Base Camp after severe weather warnings had been issued? How did an avalanche reach an area expedition operators considered comparatively protected? What happened to the workers and climbing guides caught in the avalanche? And what does this disaster tell us about the increasingly dangerous environment faced by the people who make commercial Himalayan expeditions possible? The story also follows Ghanshyam Rai, an expedition support lead whose family had already endured extraordinary tragedy before he arrived at Himlung, as well as the guides, kitchen workers, rescuers and expedition personnel caught up in the disaster. The mountain has not become safer simply because climbing it has become a business.Subscribe to Reembok Arcane for true stories of mountaineering, survival, disasters, expeditions and the people behind them. Some maps, animations and disaster sequences in this documentary are illustrative reconstructions used to explain reported events and geography. They are not presented as original footage of the avalanche.Comment below: Do you believe Himalayan expedition practices need to change as extreme weather and mountain hazards become increasingly difficult to predict?#HimlungHimal #HimlungAvalanche #NepalAvalanche #Himalaya #Mountaineering #Nepal #Avalanche #MountainDisaster #HimalayanClimbing #ReembokArcaneHimlung Himal,Himlung Himal avalanche,Himlung avalanche,Himlung Himal avalanche 2026,Nepal avalanche,Nepal avalanche 2026,Himlung Himal disaster,Himlung disaster,Nepal mountain disaster,Himalaya avalanche,Himalayan avalanche,Himalaya disaster,Nepal Himalayas,Himlung Himal Nepal,Manang avalanche,Manang Nepal,Nar Phu Valley,Narpa Bhumi, avalanche base camp, base camp avalanche, climbing disaster,Nepal mountaineering, mountain disaster documentary

The Terrifying Death of Nims Dai - The World’s Most Famous Mountaineer
Patreon: https://www.patreon.com/c/reembokarcaneOn July 30, 2026, ten climbers were moving high on Broad Peak in Pakistan’s Karakoram when a massive avalanche tore through the mountain. Among the climbers was Nims Dai (Nirmal Purja) —one of the most recognizable high-altitude mountaineers of the modern era. This is the complete story of the 2026 Broad Peak avalanche, the warnings that came before it, the decisions that placed ten climbers on the mountain, the satellite trackers that revealed the catastrophe, and the dangerous effort to bring them home. This documentary includes reconstructed maps, route animations and visual representations created to explain the geography and chronology of the disaster. Where exact locations were not publicly documented, approximate zones are used rather than presenting estimates as precise GPS positions. The avalanche caught climbers from several different expeditions, including Nims Dai, Nima Sherpa, Yukta Gurung, Nadhira Al Harthy, Wang Zhong, Kili Pemba Sherpa, Gyalu Sherpa, Nawang Thindu Sherpa, Sohail Sakhi and Mallory Geis. Our deepest condolences go to the families, friends and climbing communities of everyone lost on Broad Peak.Subscribe to Reembok Arcane for real stories of the mountains and outdoors.https://www.youtube.com/channel/UC0iCWyItdzkNj6l8Wqu4E_g #NimsDai #Avalanche #BroadPeak #Mountaineering #Karakoram #MountainDisaster #Climbing #NirmalPurja #MountainRescue #ReembokArcane

He Was Left To Die on Makalu | From Tenzing Norgay to Modern Himalayan 2026 Guiding
Konstantin Smirnov had spent nearly 30 years climbing mountains. Makalu was supposed to be the culmination of that journey his first successful summit of an 8,000-metre peak.On May 9, 2026, the 53-year-old Russian climber reached the 8,485-metre summit of Makalu with Bhajuram Gurung, the climber assigned to accompany him.Hours later, Konstantin was alone. His oxygen was gone.Night was falling. And somewhere high above Camp III, his fight to survive had begun. What happened during those hours on Makalu has since become the centre of an extraordinary dispute involving Konstantin Smirnov, Bhajuram Gurung and Makalu Adventure.Konstantin believes he was deliberately abandoned.Gurung and the expedition company dispute key elements of that account and maintain that decisions were being made in an extreme survival situation high in the death zone. But while this drama was unfolding, Makalu produced another catastrophe.American climber Shelley Johannesen, David Ashley, Tawa Sherpa and Phurba Sonam Sherpa were caught in an avalanche during their descent.Shelley was critically injured.Tawa was badly hurt. And rescuers attempting to reach them were themselves confronted by extreme winds and increasingly dangerous conditions. Two emergencies. One mountain. And a series of decisions that would be questioned long after everyone came down. This is the complete story of Konstantin Smirnov on Makalu — his summit, his survival, the competing accounts, the rescue effort, the avalanche, and the legal and moral questions that followed. This remains a developing story. Allegations discussed in this video are presented as allegations, and the accounts of the different parties are included.Reembok Arcane explores deeply researched stories from the world's most unforgiving places Himalayan disasters, historic expeditions, unexplained events and the human decisions behind them.Coming to the channel: the 1953 first confirmed ascent of Mount Everest by Sir Edmund Hillary and Tenzing Norgay, the mystery of George Mallory and Andrew Irvine on Everest in 1924, and other legendary expeditions from mountaineering history.Subscribe to Reembok Arcane. And as always...Just Hang On.#Tenzing #Everest #hiking #Mountaineering #Himalayas #MountainDisaster #TenzingNorgay #DeathZone #ReembokArcane #Makalu #KonstantinSmirnov

Millionaire Matt Dawson’s Fatal Fall on Ismoil Somoni Peak | What Happened at 5,800m?
Millionaire adventurer Matt Dawson survived depression, devastating personal loss, Everest, the South Pole, ocean rowing and some of the harshest environments on Earth. But on August 15, 2026, at approximately 5,800 metres on Ismoil Somoni Peak in Tajikistan, something went terribly wrong.Dawson suffered a fatal fall during a mountaineering expedition connected to a three-peak fundraising challenge for the ALS Network. Tajik emergency authorities later reported that he fell from the mountainside into a gorge or ravine approximately 70–80 metres deep and died from his injuries at the scene. In this year's expedition season, there have been many incidents like famous Nims dai's Broad Peak Avalanche, Nepal Glacier Melts causing floods, Russian Avalanche, this is another tragedy that could have been avoided. But major questions remain. Was Matt Dawson roped when he fell? Was he climbing with a guide or another member of the expedition? Was a crevasse involved? What actually caused the fall?Who reached him first? How was his body recovered from the mountain? What happened in the seconds before Matt Dawson fell?Dawson was attempting three mountains to raise awareness and funds for people affected by ALS, inspired in part by his friendship with actor Aaron Lazar. In this episode of Reembok Arcane we look beyond the headline and into Matt Dawson’s remarkable and complicated life.Patreon: / reembokarcane (https://www.youtube.com/redirect?event=video_description&redir_token=QUM4Zm9rUkIwby1DMlFpTktGaXEtZjQzQWxFOHxBTl9pYzRjQVFsX0pIVzBjbUItRDB3bS1UTVN5Z2V1Ums1dFdpVkliQTlMaGE4R1BzUm0wdEJDQmcyaWdZdjhobkNhOVY0NDdKMjdqQUhWd2h2cFBTeFh4RUpSUHVnQ0hJbzhp&q=https%3A%2F%2Fwww.patreon.com%2Freembokarcane&v=bhRGZLaGX1U)#Mountaineering (https://www.youtube.com/hashtag/mountaineering) #IsmoilSomoniPeak (https://www.youtube.com/hashtag/ismoilsomonipeak) #Hiking (https://www.youtube.com/hashtag/hiking) #MountainAccident (https://www.youtube.com/hashtag/mountainaccident) #Tajikistan (https://www.youtube.com/hashtag/tajikistan) #OutdoorMystery (https://www.youtube.com/hashtag/outdoormystery) #storytime (https://www.youtube.com/hashtag/storytime) #PacificCrestTrail (https://www.youtube.com/hashtag/pacificcresttrail)#PCT (https://www.youtube.com/hashtag/pct)#PCT2026 (https://www.youtube.com/hashtag/pct2026)#PCTThruHike (https://www.youtube.com/hashtag/pctthruhike)#Wilderness (https://www.youtube.com/hashtag/wilderness) #Backpacking (https://www.youtube.com/hashtag/backpacking) #AppalachianTrail (https://www.youtube.com/hashtag/appalachiantrail) #HikingAccident (https://www.youtube.com/hashtag/hikingaccident)Nims Purja,Nirmal Purja,Nimsdai,Nims Purja record,Nims Purja world record,Nims Purja 14 Peaks,Nims Purja Broad Peak2026,Nims Purja Broad Peak avalanche,14 Peaks,14 Peaks Nothing Is Impossible,14 Peaks record,14 peaks without oxygen, fourteen 8000m peaks,Cho Oyu closed,Cho Oyu climbing ban,Shishapangma closed,Everest North,Everest Tibet,Cai Guo-Qiang,Cai Guoqiang,Rising Dragon,Tibet fireworks,Broad Peak,Reembok Arcane

They Went to Learn Mountain Survival Then an Avalanche Hit 33 of Them
A Mountain Survival Course Turned Into a Real-Life Disaster 33 People Vanished #Avalanche #mountaineering #disasterstory 33 climbers and mountain trainees were caught in a catastrophic snow-and-ice collapse beneath Mount Mizhirgi in Russia’s Bezengi Gorge. Many were trained to survive extreme mountain terrain — yet the mountain reached a place they believed was safe.On September 6, 2026, an enormous mass of snow and ice broke high above Mount Mizhirgi in Russia’s North Caucasus and swept into an organized mountain-training area below. The first emergency report said only 15 people were involved.By the following morning, authorities discovered the true number was 33.Many of those caught were serving Russian security personnel undergoing specialized mountain training alongside experienced civilian mountaineering instructors. Among them was 70-year-old Albert Izotov, a veteran Saint Petersburg climber who had survived avalanches on Mizhirgi itself years earlier. As of the latest official update on September 9, 13 people have been confirmed dead and four remain missing, while rescuers continue working beneath unstable terrain where further snow-and-ice collapses have already occurred. But this disaster raises questions far beyond one avalanche. Why did the collapse travel farther than experienced mountaineers believed possible?Could changing glacier and high-mountain conditions linked to a warming climate be making historical avalanche boundaries less reliable? And as glacier failures become an increasing concern around the world, should governments responsible for heavily used mountain regions be doing more to monitor unstable ice using radar, satellites, cameras and other early-warning technology? In this Reembok Arcane documentary, we reconstruct the Mount Mizhirgi avalanche, explain who the 33 people really were, follow Albert Izotov’s extraordinary history with the mountain, examine the rescue operation and the investigation into possible negligence, and ask whether the mountains are beginning to change faster than our safety systems can adapt. They went beneath Mizhirgi to learn how to survive the mountains. Then the mountain came to them.Subscribe to Reembok Arcane for deeply researched mountain disasters, climbing history and the stories behind the headlines.

Langtang Lirung: 8 Died Trying to Climb the Glacier That Flooded Nepal in 2026
The first ascent of Langtang Lirung was achieved during the historic 1978 Nepalese–Japanese expedition led by Akira Ban.On October 24, 1978, Japanese climber Seishi Wada and Nepalese climber Pemba Tsering reached the summit. Their expedition united nine Japanese members connected with Osaka City University and four Nepalese members from Tribhuvan University.Akira Ban’s connection with Langtang Lirung began much earlier. In 1961, he participated as a 21-year-old Osaka City University student. Seventeen years later, he returned to the Langtang Valley as leader of the expedition that finally completed the mountain’s first ascent. This documentary reconstructs that remarkable journey through archival photographs, expedition records and the stories of the Japanese and Nepalese climbers who made mountaineering history in the Himalayas.#LangtangLirung #everest #nepalfloods

Nims Dai Controversy: K2, Kathmandu & the Nirmal Purja Allegations
00:00 Introduction00:57 Nepal flood Rasuwa District near the Tibet border around Syabrubesi and the Bhote Koshi/Trishuli river valleys, after a glacier and ice-rock collapse caused a massive flash flood that swept away villages, roads and bridges and killed hundreds01:44 StoryNims Dai Controversy: Gilgit-Baltistan's K2, Nepal's Kathmandu & the Nirmal Purja AllegationsWhat happened in the Nims Dai controversy involving K2 and a Kathmandu hotel room?In 2024, two women publicly made serious allegations against world-famous Nepali mountaineer Nirmal “Nims Dai” Purja, known for 14 Peaks: Nothing Is Impossible, Project Possible and the historic winter ascent of K2.American physician and climber Dr. April Leonardo, who joined Purja’s company on a K2 expedition in 2022, alleged that Purja made repeated unwanted advances toward her during the expedition.Professional Finnish mountaineer Lotta Hintsa separately described an alleged encounter during what she said was supposed to be a business meeting in a Kathmandu hotel suite in March 2023.Nirmal Purja unequivocally denied wrongdoing, describing the allegations against him as false and defamatory. So what was actually alleged? What happened on K2?What was said to have happened behind the closed door in Kathmandu? What evidence, messages, witnesses and competing accounts became public? What was Nims Dai’s response? And after examining both the allegations and the denials, how much can we actually know about what happened? This is not a declaration of guilt or innocence. This story examines publicly reported allegations, responses and available accounts surrounding one of the most famous and controversial figures in modern mountaineering.Nirmal Purja transformed Himalayan climbing through Project Possible, 14 Peaks, Everest, K2 and dozens of 8,000-metre ascents. Should Annapurna Be Renamed After Nims Dai? Nepal’s Controversial Proposal
Should **Annapurna be renamed after Nirmal “Nims Dai” Purja?**Local authorities in Nepal’s Annapurna region have proposed several ways to honour the legendary Nepali mountaineer following his death on **Broad Peak in 2026** — including a statue, a museum and a trail bearing his name. But one proposal has created a much bigger controversy:**Changing Annapurna I to “Nimsdai Annapurna.”**In this story, we go much deeper than the headline. Why do Himalayan mountain names matter so much? What does **Annapurna** actually mean? Why are mountains such as **Machhapuchhre and Mount Kailash** considered too sacred to climb? How did **Chomolungma become known globally as Mount Everest**? And should the achievements of even one of Nepal’s greatest mountaineers be enough to alter the ancient identity of a Himalayan mountain?Nims Dai changed modern mountaineering through **Project Possible, the fourteen 8,000-metre peaks, the winter ascent of K2**, and dozens of high-altitude summits. But Annapurna had a name — and a meaning — long before modern mountaineering existed. So where should the line be drawn between **honouring a legend and changing cultural history?**Watch to the end and decide:**Nimsdai Annapurna — or simply Annapurna?**#Annapurna #NimsDai #NirmalPurja #Himalayas #Mountaineering #Nepal #AnnapurnaI #ProjectPossible #MountKailash #Everest #ReembokArcaneAnnapurna, Annapurna I, Nims Dai, Nimsdai Annapurna, Nirmal Purja, Nims Purja, Annapurna rename, rename Annapurna, Annapurna controversy, Nepal Annapurna, Nims Dai Annapurna, Nirmal Purja Annapurna, Nims Dai death, Broad Peak 2026, Nirmal Purja Broad Peak, Project Possible, 14 Peaks, fourteen 8000m peaks, K2 winter ascent, Nepal mountaineering, Nepali mountaineers, Himalayas, Himalayan mountains, sacred mountains, Annapurna meaning, Annapurna goddess, Mount Kailash, Kailash mountain, Machhapuchhre, Machapuchare, sacred Himalayas, Mount Everest, Chomolungma, Sagarmatha, Everest history, mountain naming controversy, mountaineering controversy, climbing documentary, mountain stories, Reembok Arcane

Nims Purja’s Final 14 Peaks Quest — 2026 Broad Peak Avalanche, Cho Oyu & China’s Tibet Scandal
Nirmal “Nims” Purja died on Broad Peak while chasing one of the most extraordinary records in mountaineering: becoming the first person to climb all fourteen 8,000-metre peaks **twice without supplemental oxygen**.Had he successfully completed Broad Peak, only *Cho Oyu* would have remained. But there was a problem.*China had already closed Cho Oyu to foreign climbers.*And Cho Oyu wasn’t alone.*Shishapangma and the north side of Mount Everest were also closed to international expeditions.*So why were some of the most important mountains in Tibet suddenly off limits? The story leads back to September 2025, when outdoor giant *Arc’teryx* sponsored artist *Cai Guo-Qiang’s “Ascending Dragon”* — a spectacular 52-second fireworks display across a high-altitude Tibetan mountainside.More than 1,000 pyrotechnic units were involved. The backlash was immediate.Chinese authorities investigated environmental damage and the approval process. Officials were disciplined. Arc’teryx apologized and was assigned ecological restoration responsibilities. Then the climbing permits stopped coming.Mountaineering sources later linked the continuing restrictions on Everest North, Cho Oyu and Shishapangma to fallout from the investigation — although China has not publicly stated that the fireworks alone caused the closures. And then the story became even stranger.A senior Tibet Sports Bureau official came under a serious disciplinary and legal investigation, while another report — relying on unnamed sources — alleged authorities were examining possible corruption involving foreign expedition permits. Those wider corruption claims remain unconfirmed. So what really happened?Did 52 seconds of fireworks expose a much larger problem inside the system controlling access to Tibet’s highest mountains? And should ordinary climbers be locked out because of something a global outdoor company, an artist and the officials who approved it were responsible for? There is an eerie connection to Nims Purja’s own history. In 2019, *Shishapangma was also closed* when Nims was trying to complete his original Project Possible.China eventually issued a special permit. He climbed Shishapangma.*14 Peaks: Nothing Is Impossible* became history.Seven years later, Nims was approaching another unprecedented finish.Broad Peak first. Then Cho Oyu.One final mountain.Except once again...*China had closed the door.*👇 *What do you think?*Should China reopen *Cho Oyu, Shishapangma and Everest North* to foreign climbers?Or if the fireworks exposed failures in the system controlling access to Tibet’s mountains, is China justified in keeping them closed?Nims Purja, Nirmal Purja, Nimsdai, Nims Purja record, Nims Purja world record, Nims Purja 14 Peaks, Nims Purja Broad Peak2026, Nims Purja Broad Peak avalanche, Nims Purja without oxygen, Nims Purja no oxygen, 14 Peaks, 14 Peaks Nothing Is Impossible, 14 Peaks record, 14 peaks without oxygen, fourteen 8000m peaks, 8000 meter peaks, Cho Oyu, Cho Oyu closed, Cho Oyu climbing ban, Cho Oyu 2026, Shishapangma, Shishapangma closed, Shishapangma climbing ban, Everest North, Everest North closed, Everest Tibet, China climbing ban, Tibet climbing ban, Tibet mountaineering, China mountaineering, Arc'teryx, Arcteryx, Arc'teryx fireworks, Arcteryx fireworks, Arc'teryx controversy, Cai Guo-Qiang, Cai Guoqiang, Ascending Dragon, Rising Dragon, Tibet fireworks, Tibet fireworks controversy, Broad Peak, Broad Peak avalanche, Broad Peak avalanche 2026, mountaineering documentary, climbing documentary, mountain documentary, Everest documentary, Himalayan mystery, mountain mystery, mountaineering mystery, Reembok Arcane

Broad Peak Avalanche 2026: Nadhira Al Harthy’s Final Climb on same Mountain - Nirmal Nimsdai Purja
Broad Peak Avalanche 2026 claimed the lives of Nadhira Al Harthy, legendary mountaineer Nirmal “Nimsdai” Purja and eight other climbers on July 30, 2026.But behind the headlines was an extraordinary human story. This Reembok Arcane documentary follows the remarkable life of Nadhira Al Harthy — the geography teacher from Oman who became the first Omani woman to summit Mount Everest and went on to climb some of the most dangerous mountains on Earth. From her early experience on Kilimanjaro and the failures that nearly ended her dream, to meeting her mentor Khalid Al Siyabi, training through the mountains and wadis of Oman, reaching Everest, returning to Ama Dablam, battling fear and altitude on Manaslu, and eventually standing on K2 and Nanga Parbat — Nadhira repeatedly proved that where a person begins does not determine how far they can go.Then came Broad Peak.In July 2026, Nadhira joined climbers attempting the 8,000-metre mountain in Pakistan’s Karakoram after days of difficult weather and heavy snowfall.Among the climbers on the mountain was Nirmal “Nimsdai” Purja — the world-famous Nepali mountaineer behind Project Possible and 14 Peaks: Nothing Is Impossible. On July 30, an enormous avalanche struck the climbers above Camp II.Radios went silent.GPS trackers suddenly moved violently downhill. And a rescue operation began for ten climbers whose families and friends were desperately waiting for news.In this documentary, we reconstruct what happened on Broad Peak while remembering the extraordinary people behind the tragedy — especially Nadhira Al Harthy, whose journey from Oman to Everest, K2, Nanga Parbat and ultimately Broad Peak inspired people far beyond the world of mountaineering. This is not simply the story of how Nadhira Al Harthy died.It is the story of how she lived.Real people. Real mountains. Real stories.Subscribe to Reembok Arcane for long-form documentaries about mountaineering, survival, adventure, unexplained events and the extraordinary human stories hidden in the world’s mountains.#BroadPeak #NadhiraAlHarthy #Nimsdai

Broad Peak Disaster 2026: Eyewitness Account | Sohail Sakhi Found The Tragic Story of Nawang Sherpa
Broad Peak Disaster 2026 became one of the most devastating mountaineering tragedies of the year. But after the avalanche, another story began — the desperate effort to find the climbers who never came home.In this episode, we hear the remarkable eyewitness account surrounding the discovery of Sohail Sakhi, the Pakistani mountaineer who remained missing on Broad Peak until searchers noticed something emerging from the avalanche debris: a climbing boot. What followed was hours of digging — and finally, Sohail was found. But another climber remains high on the mountain. We also tell the powerful story of Nawang Thendu Sherpa, the young Nepali mountaineer whose body was located above 6,000 metres in extremely dangerous avalanche terrain. Fellow climbers Pem Dorje Sherpa and Speed Dawa Sherpa attempted to reach him, carrying hundreds of metres of rope into a steep couloir — until another avalanche forced them to make an agonizing decision. As Pem Dorje later explained:“We didn’t want there to be another two bodies up there.”This is not simply the story of a mountain disaster. It is a story about the people who go back. The rescuers. The porters. The Sherpas. The families waiting thousands of kilometres away. And the meaning behind three very simple words:Bring them home.We also look back at Sohail Sakhi’s life in Hunza, his extraordinary mountaineering career, his dreams for Pakistan’s climbing community, and the painful irony of a man who once helped recover others from the mountains eventually needing strangers to do the same for him.And we remember Nawang — a climber who had previously helped recover another mountaineer from high on Makalu, only for his own family to now wait for someone to bring him home.If you enjoy deeply researched mountaineering documentaries, mountain mysteries, rescue stories and the human lives behind climbing tragedies, please subscribe and join us.Broad Peak 2026 was an avalanche. What happened afterward was a story about humanity.#BroadPeak2026 #BroadPeak #SohailSakhi #NawangSherpa #Mountaineering #MountainRescue #Sherpa #Himalayas #Karakoram #ClimbingDocumentary #MountainDisaster #PakistanMountaineering

Broad Peak 2026 Nims Dai Update: Two Dreams, One Mountain | The Story of Sohail Sakhi & Mallory Geis
*Broad Peak 2026: Two Dreams, One Mountain — the story of Pakistani mountaineer Sohail Sakhi and American climber Mallory Geis, two very different lives that came together on one of the world’s highest mountains.**Mallory Geis, 39, was attempting her **first 8,000-metre peak** after making a dramatic change in her life. She had closed her Pilates business in San Antonio, Texas, and increasingly committed herself to climbing and adventure. Before leaving for Pakistan, she described Broad Peak as her first “big kid climbing expedition.” ([The Independent][1])Sohail Sakhi came from **Hunza, Pakistan**. He was an accomplished high-altitude mountaineer, expedition leader, photographer and founder of the adventure company Moving Mountains. His climbing résumé included K2, Gasherbrum I, Gasherbrum II and Manaslu, as well as an unsupported, no-supplemental-oxygen ascent of Nanga Parbat. He was also working to mentor younger Pakistani climbers and develop the Great Karakoram Trail project. Nims Dai’s Final Climb: Inside the Deadly Broad Peak Avalanche
On July 30, 2026, an avalanche swept away a 10-member international climbing team on Broad Peak in Pakistan’s Karakoram range. Among those killed was Nirmal “Nims Dai” Purja, the Nepalese mountaineer whose record-breaking achievements and belief that nothing is impossible inspired millions. This documentary podcast reconstructs the terrifying final climb—the unstable mountain, the sudden fall recorded by satellite trackers, the brief hope created by a moving GPS signal, and the confirmation that nobody caught in the avalanche had survived. It also explores the life and purpose behind the records: Nims’s humble beginnings in Nepal, his dream of becoming a Gurkha, his historic entry into Britain’s Special Boat Service, Project Possible, the first winter ascent of K2, and his mission to bring Nepalese climbers, Sherpas, guides and porters out of the background and into the centre of mountaineering history. Through his foundation and the Lobuche Porter House, Nims also sought to provide recognition, dignity and practical support to the local workers who make Himalayan expeditions possible. This episode is dedicated to every person lost on Broad Peak, to the families carrying unimaginable grief, and to the rescuers and mountain communities affected by the tragedy. It is a story about courage and human possibility—but also about accumulated danger, environmental responsibility, and why ambition must always walk beside humility. Nims Dai and nine other climbers died in the July 30 avalanche. His remains and those of several teammates were subsequently located, while recovery efforts continued in exceptionally difficult terrain.
