#217 How to Do Better at Horse Shows
Here’s a horse-show mystery for you: how can you ride like you know exactly what you’re doing on Wednesday… and by Saturday feel like somebody swapped riders on you? 😂
Your horse didn’t erase three months of training on the trailer ride over. And you didn’t suddenly forget how to ride because somebody handed you a back number.
But pressure DOES change things.
And this is where I see so many really capable western riders get frustrated. They know what their horse feels like at home. They know they can ride well. Then they get into the warm-up pen, everything starts feeling a little more important, and suddenly they’re thinking faster, trying harder, second-guessing themselves, and wondering where the heck their normal riding went.
So in this episode, we’re talking about the gap between the rider you are at home and the rider who shows up at horse shows—and why closing that gap isn’t always about more lessons, more practice, or trying harder.
I’m breaking down what pressure can change in your body, focus, timing, and decision-making, why your horse may start feeling different because YOU feel different, and what real confidence under pressure actually looks like.
Because I don’t want you spending another show season wondering, “Why can’t I just ride like myself when it counts?”
There’s a reason. And more importantly, it’s trainable. 🐴🔥

I am genuinely curious to hear about your experience—especially if you’re one of those riders who can absolutely nail it at home and then feels completely different once you get to the show.
And be sure to leave a review on iTunes to help other western riders discover the show!
In This Episode You Will Learn:
Why being able to ride well at home doesn’t automatically mean you can access those same skills under pressure
What may actually be happening when you suddenly feel tight, rushed, hesitant, or mentally scattered at a horse show
Why your horse can feel completely different at the show even when your horse isn’t the real thing that changed
How pressure can affect your timing, feel, softness, focus, and decision-making in the saddle
Why trying harder can sometimes pull you even farther away from the ride you’re trying to create
The difference between simply wanting more confidence and actually training confidence
Why “relax,” “trust your horse,” and “stop overthinking” aren’t very useful when your nervous system is already fired up
Why one mistake doesn’t have to take the rest of your run down with it
What I mean when I talk about regulating, rewiring, reclaiming, and reinforcing your response to pressure
Why becoming a stronger competitor does NOT mean becoming fearless
What better horse-show performance actually looks like: recovering faster, staying connected, and keeping access to the rider you already know how to be
Why mental performance deserves a place in your training program right alongside everything you’re already doing with your horse
Questions I Answer:
Why do you ride better at home than you do at horse shows?
Why does your horse feel different at shows?
Why do you suddenly overthink things you normally know how to do?
Why do you start micromanaging your horse when you’re nervous?
Do you actually need more saddle time, or are you training the wrong problem?
Why does one mistake sometimes throw off your entire run?
What happens to your timing and feel when you’re under pressure?
Why doesn’t telling yourself to “just be confident” actually work?
Can confidence really be trained?
Do you need to get rid of your nerves before you can perform well?
What should better performance under pressure actually feel like?
How do you start bringing more of your home-ride self into the show pen?
