It's more than standing beside a student who's distressed and speaking softly until that distress kind of melts away. Now, being regulated yourself obviously matters. Of course it does. If you're getting drawn into a heated argument and then you become louder or more threatening or you start taking the student's behavior personally, That makes helping them much harder on your part.
