They know they're not children anymore, and they have a deep need for autonomy, to be more in charge of their life, to make their own decisions, to be treated with dignity and respect, to be listened to and given due consideration. And when we threaten their autonomy by over-controlling and hovering and fixing and giving advice and punishing and not listening to them, We accomplish the exact opposite of what we're trying to do.
