[…] There was an American national interest when the Soviet Union was powerfully emerging to hold on to Western Europe. Why? Because this was Atlantic Europe. Atlantic Europe had conquered much of the world. It was the first global system. The Netherlands controlled vast areas of Asia. So they lost those empires. One of the most important things about 1945 was not the end of the war. but the collapse of the European imperial system. And these nations then, when the United States looked at the map, they said, if the Russians come and take the ports on the Atlantic, in Hamburg, Bremen, in Calais, they will be able to put forward a fleet into the Atlantic.
