And like many people in Russia, she believes that in exchange for leaving the state alone, the state will leave her alone. And my novel asks if that's actually possible. And my answer is no, because under a regime like Putin's, no one can be safe. And that's the reason why I left. You can be targeted because, you know, just somebody denounces you. You can be targeted because an official needs a successful prosecution. You can become useful, as an example, to frighten other people. […]
