Investing Series Ep 3: Eoin meets Tánaiste Simon Harris

In the final episode, Eoin sits down with Tánaiste and Minister for Finance Simon Harris to ask what Ireland’s new investment scheme will look like. They discuss why Ireland has never really had a culture of investing, whether tax and complexity have put people off, and how a new scheme could help ordinary savers build more financial security over time. Eoin also puts what he has learned from Professor Robert C. Merton, the UK and Sweden to the Minister, and asks whether Ireland can finally get this right. Hosted on Acast. Investing Series Ep 2: How Investing Actually Works

One of the reasons Irish people don’t invest is simple: a lot of us don’t know how it works. In episode two, Eoin breaks investing down in plain English, from shares and bonds to risk, diversification, and why looking at your investments every day can be a terrible idea. He also speaks with experts in the UK and Sweden to find out how the ISA and ISK schemes work, and what Ireland might learn from them. Hosted on Acast. Investing Series Ep 1: Ireland’s Investing Problem

Irish people are good savers. But are we good investors? In this special three-part series, Eoin explores Ireland’s relationship with investing, why we lag behind many of our European counterparts, and what prevents so many of us from taking the leap. Across the series, Eoin looks at the scale of money sitting in Irish bank accounts, travels to Boston to meet Nobel Prize-winning economist Professor Robert C. Merton, and speaks to experts in the UK and Sweden about how their ISA and ISK investment schemes work. The series finishes with Eoin sitting down with Tánaiste and Minister for Finance Simon Harris to ask what Ireland’s new investment scheme could look like, how it might work, and whether it can finally help more Irish people get investing. In episode one, Eoin begins by exploring Ireland’s unique position: we save a lot but invest far less than we could. He looks at why so much money is sitting on deposit, how inflation quietly eats away at it, and why investing still feels out of reach for many people. He then travels to Boston to meet Nobel Laureate Professor Robert C. Merton to ask what Ireland should do to improve its investing, and how any new scheme should be designed. Hosted on Acast. […] And he popped in a couple of times the type of car he drove. And I let it go. And I let it go. And I could see the wife, you know, the eye rolling. And then I just named it. And I said, why is it really important for me to know that you drive next brand of car? And that was really interesting to dive into that. We go, poor. It's all I ever wanted. So then it's not really the materialistic that you're looking at. It's really, you know, what would that mean to him that he worked his way up to be able to afford that car? Do you know the way when we're talking about stuff like this, right? And you've got, and you're kind of everything kind of stems back to your early childhood. […]
