[…] And they said that Van Dorn turned and said, who'll go raise the flag? And they said he didn't even wait three seconds. Nobody said anything. He took off in a dead sprint through live fire coming from both sides, lifts the flag, hoists it up, sticks it back into the ground, runs back and dives. And some of the eyewitness accounts from the men say they could see bullets just whizzing past Van Dorn's head. And he got an accommodation for bravery for that. And he got a couple of other accommodations in the Mexican-American War where he served with Robert E. Lee. And then he was promoted and he had some other missions and things like that, but where he really became famous. […]
