Reclaiming the Red Tent: Menstrual Wisdom, Rituals & Women's Cycles with Maxime Lichtenberg

What if menstruation was something to honor and celebrate rather than hide or endure? In this episode of the Wombs of the World Podcast, Charlotte sits down with Maxime Lichtenberg to explore the Red Tent tradition, the sacredness of menstruation, and the wisdom found within women's cycles. Maxime shares her journey into birth work and the historical, cultural, and spiritual significance of the Red Tent as a space for connection, rest, and honoring the transitions of womanhood. Together, they explore the cycles within our bodies, the symbolism of menstrual blood, and how reconnecting with these experiences can transform our relationship with ourselves. The conversation also explores cultural traditions surrounding menstruation and birth, the importance of honoring a young person's first period, and how education and community can help reclaim narratives that have too often been shaped by shame or silence. In this episode, we explore: The history and significance of the Red Tent tradition Understanding and honoring menstrual cycles The spiritual symbolism of menstrual blood Reconnecting with the body's natural rhythms Reclaiming menstrual wisdom through education Cultural practices surrounding menstruation and childbirth Honoring the first bleed as a rite of passage Menstrual leave and changing societal perspectives The role of community and women's circles Balancing modern life with traditional womb-centered practices Creating space for rest, reflection, and connection At its heart, this conversation is an invitation to reconsider how we experience and talk about menstruation. Rather than viewing our cycles as something to manage or conceal, what might change if we approached them with curiosity, respect, and celebration?
