[…] So on March 9th, 1897, the autopsy report was filed and Trout Shue was arrested immediately. And he was held in the Greenbrier County Jail in Lewisburg without bail. The trial is the state of West Virginia versus E.S. Shue. And that opened on June 22nd, 1897 at the Greenbrier County Courthouse in Lewisburg. The judge, Homer A. Holt, presided over the proceedings. Prosecutor John Alfred Preston led the prosecution, assisted by Henry Gilmer. Shue was represented by defense attorneys William P. Ruckner. And it actually kind of surprised me that he wouldn't just represent himself because it feels like that's sort of a behavior that would track with him. […]
