[…] So when I'm talking about oral micronized progesterone, whether it's compounded or not, for a lot of women, that allopregnenolone metabolite is what a lot of women derive the benefits from. Now, we know that allopregnenolone is also helpful for upregulating of this key neurotransmitter, which is GABA, which is our main inhibitory neurotransmitter. And in a small percentage of women, I've seen estimates anywhere from 10 to 20%, they get a paradoxical effect. But what's interesting is the more that I've looked into this paradoxical effect, and by that I mean the kissing cousin of GABA is glutamate, which is an excitatory neurotransmitter, it's starting to look like the gut microbiome may play a role in whether or not that metabolite is calming and relaxing or excitatory.
