He served as <a title="Minister (government)" href= "https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Minister_(government)">Minister</a> of <a title="Ministry of Foreign Affairs (Soviet Union)" href= "https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Ministry_of_Foreign_Affairs_(Soviet_Union)">Foreign Affairs</a> (1957–1985) and as <a title= "List of heads of state of the Soviet Union" href= "https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_heads_of_state_of_the_Soviet_Union">Chairman</a> of the <a title="Presidium of the Supreme Soviet" href= "https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Presidium_of_the_Supreme_Soviet">Presidium of the Supreme Soviet</a> (1985–1988).
