[…] I think of it as a path, a direction. Sometimes it's the road less traveled, but none of it is a should. But I do really feel a should about this, that connecting should never mean performing. We shouldn't need to be performative and neither should our child. and I did write down some reasons here to share with you, some of which I've already covered a little bit. One, it's not a real and true way of connecting. Two, it encourages inauthenticity. Because whatever we do with children is teaching them something. And that's teaching them that connecting is about us having to perform rather than be ourselves, feeling like we're enough just to be with each other. […]
