About What World Leaders NEED to Know about Russia
Authoritarian regimes don’t survive by accident. They survive by mastering fear, memory, and human instinct.
This channel explores how power systems twist history, culture, and psychology to maintain control. Russia’s past and present serve as the clearest case study, revealing patterns found in authoritarian societies everywhere.
I’m Elvira Bary, an author born in the USSR. Drawing on lived experience, research, and cultural insight, I break down how strongmen build systems, justify lies, and train people to accept - and defend - their own confinement.

What Putin is Desperate to Hide: The Truth Behind Russia’s State Secrets
Order your copy of The Snow Queen's Spring here: https://link.amazon/B0iZ1mhQaIn this episode, Elvira Bary looks at Russia through the information the Kremlin increasingly makes difficult to see. Every country protects genuine military secrets, but Russia’s secrecy now reaches much further, into economic statistics, government spending, casualty figures, court records, trade data, and information about the people in power. Why have facts that were once public become dangerous? And what can their disappearance tell us about the vulnerabilities of Putin’s system? From the war and sanctions to classified budgets and self-censorship, this video examines how secrecy can protect not only national security, but also the image of a state that does not want its citizens or the outside world to measure what is really happening.

Inside Russia Right Now: What Returning Emigrants Actually See
In this episode, Elvira Bary looks at Russia through the eyes of emigrants who left the country and later returned for short visits. What they find is not a society in obvious collapse, but something more unsettling: renovated cities alongside drone disruptions, convenient services alongside growing restrictions, wounded soldiers moving through ordinary civilian spaces, and friends who increasingly avoid discussing the war. Returning emigrants notice the small frictions and contradictions that residents have gradually learned to accept as normal—and, perhaps most strikingly, a shrinking sense of the future. The result is a portrait of a country that still functions remarkably well on the surface while war, repression, uncertainty, and adaptation quietly reshape everyday life underneath.

What Putin Is Betting On: Why He Can Never Stop The War in Ukraine
In this episode, Elvira Bary examines the calculations keeping Vladimir Putin in the war after more than four years of enormous costs. Rather than waiting for one decisive breakthrough, the Kremlin appears to be making several bets at once: that Russia can outlast Ukraine in a war of attrition, that high oil prices will keep money flowing, that missile pressure can exploit weaknesses in Ukrainian air defenses, and that political and economic strain will weaken support in Europe and the United States. But every one of those bets depends on timing. The deeper question is whether Ukraine and its allies reach their breaking point first—or whether Russia’s own economic, military, and political problems become too expensive to manage.
