And what feels like closeness to you can actually feel like pressure or a burden to them. When the parent-child relationship becomes a friendship first, the child often ends up in the role of confidant, therapist, caretaker, person in place of partner or parent. They're suddenly responsible for your secrets, your struggles, your loneliness. And here's the problem. That flips the dynamic. It asks your kids to meet your needs instead of you meeting theirs.
